Earthquake Near Japan Today

Latest Update:

According to the latest reports, an earthquake registering an upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture early Monday. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued a tsunami warning for areas along the Noto Peninsula coast, but has since lifted the warning. There is no threat of tsunami damage at this time.

Previous Earthquakes in Japan:

In the past few months, several other earthquakes have occurred in Japan. On July 16, 2023, a magnitude 7.5 earthquake struck western Japan, triggering tsunami warnings and leaving at least four people dead. On June 18, 2023, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima Prefecture, causing minor damage but no injuries.

Tsunami Warnings:

When an earthquake occurs near the coast, the JMA may issue a tsunami warning. A tsunami warning means that a tsunami is possible and people in affected areas should evacuate to higher ground. Tsunami warnings are based on the magnitude and location of the earthquake, as well as the potential for damage.

Earthquake Preparedness:

It is important to be prepared for earthquakes, especially if you live in an area that is prone to seismic activity. Here are a few tips for earthquake preparedness:

  • Have an emergency plan in place and know what to do in the event of an earthquake.
  • Keep a supply of food, water, and other essentials on hand in case of an emergency.
  • Secure furniture and appliances to prevent them from falling over during an earthquake.
  • Know the location of your nearest earthquake shelter.
